Graham states... Now is the right time to bring back Top of the Pops

A British broadcasting institution that only became tired and irrelevant due to the poor content of the UK singles charts. With download sales now counting toward chart position it means that the "top 40" now contains classic music, album tracks and music that all ages enjoy (rather than before when it was only single buying teenagers). I believe that if the show were to be reinstated, with those acts that wish to play live being allowed to do so, it would have a wide appeal.

dewolfe says... Not to throw a cat amongst the pigeons, but is he really playing that? It look's slightly 'mimed' if at all possible. The thing is it sounds like the music has been placed over the performance - which is still very good, but he may have missed a note or two and we'd never know. Maybe not.

Elvis insists... school music lessons should concentrate less on theory and more on feel

so rather than just learning HOW to play instruments and read music give the kids a reason to WANT to play an instrument by studying the music the kids listen to, how it is constructed and where it's influences lay. Much chart music is simple to play and understand and it would give the students a chance to connect. Violins and recorders should be banned at the novice level, they sound awful when badly played whereas acoustic guitar and piano are naturally more pleasant sounding.

As you can probably guess I was damaged by school recorder lessons.

Graham says... We tried to sell our piano last year, it's good quality and less that 5 years old and we couldn't find anyone who wanted it. When my nan died last year we had to take her's to the dump for the same reason. Someone needs to set up a charity "unwanted pianos for schools"

Biff says... However the recorder is an affordable way to intriduce lots of children to music at the same time. If everyone could afford a piano, or a school could afford 30 for a class, then that would be a different story.

Graham says... Agree completely, trying to learn "Clare De Lune" and "when the saints go marching in" at primary school was never my idea of fun. Fortunately my high school music teacher was a funky old hippy and encouraged me and some friends to form our first band. He lent us a drum kit and PA too.

I don't mean a big history lesson but things like how something like Iron Maiden or Nickelback uses a pentatonic scale which goes back to American blues music, or how hip-hop beats can be traced back to Jamaican music, and how both can be traced back to West Africa

dewolfe says... Though like everything, it's down to how well it's taught. I really like the idea of teaching music by what the kids listen to today - a great hook. As for the history, if it's not too heavily laid on, i think kids would be surprised to learn that what they listen to now is actually not new at all.

Graham believes... the name of the MOBO Awards is unnecessary because almost all popular music is "Music Of Black Origin" anyway

I mean, almost all 'popular' music can be traced back to roots in black music, whether that be rock, blues, jazz, reggae, African, ska, RnB, RnR, soul, funk or calypso. It's not as if you have to be of African descent to get nominated for or win a MOBO award, so why not just call it the 'Music Awards'. I mean it's not like Teutonic machine music or skiffle would ever gets nominated anyway. Basically it's just a cooler version of the BRIT awards.

Matola reckons... that children now are exposed to a less diverse set of music styles than 30 years ago.

Kids have their own tv's, their own ipods, their own computers. There is no sharing, no taking it in turns to have to listen to your music - hence they do not develop a tolerance of music they may otherwise choose not to listen to.

Biff says... I guess technology is cheaper so we are able to afford more of it and hence need to share less. We live in an increasingly fast paced society and this is just another aspect of it. We are still a one tv household, and I suspect because of it, we watch less than if we had 2 or more.

With your own ipods I guess you would never listen to your parents music and learn to tolerate it, or even enjoy it.
